Our Classes!
Our 45 minute classes meet once a week for 6weeks. The classes include songs, rhythmic rhymes, movement, and instrument play. These activities are presented as informal, non-performance-oriented musical experiences--developmentally appropriate for children and easy for parents and caregivers--regardless of their own musical ability. Two CDs and a songbook are included! Scroll down to learn more about the various classes we offer and see our current class offerings!
This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five—and through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience. Babies (not available for summer, but will return this fall!) Every child’s development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Babies eight months and younger at the time of registration may attend a Mixed Ages Class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older brother or sister. Babies may also take the special "Babies Class" offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated.) The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in infants. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby.
Big Kids Family Music® (not currently available) Big Kids Family Music (BKFM) is a 60-minute class geared to the interests and social nature of children ages 5–7. (To attend the Big Kids Family Music class, your child must be 5 years of age by the start of the semester you wish to attend.) Families still play an important part in this class, although the adults and children may have different musical roles. Game songs, folk dances, jam sessions, dramatic play, and more structured work in rhythm and tonality will be included. The class uses materials from the current Music Together song collection, along with materials created specifically for older children. Learn how to support your child musically as he or she develops more advanced skills in singing, dancing, playing instruments, and creative improvisation, thus providing the foundation for music literacy. Big Kids Family Music Plus! (not available this summer, but will return this fall!) In this class, the normal Big Kids Family Music experience is expanded to 75 minutes, including an extended period of work with instruments in both solos and ensembles. Children learn to play specific melodies and accompaniments, as well as improvise and compose. Xylophones, keyboards, and djembe-style drums are added to the regular Music Together instrumentarium. Parents are encouraged to attend as many classes as they wish, taking into consideration your child’s independence and your own desire to participate. However, the following minimum parent/caregiver attendance is required: • Attend the full class on weeks 1, 5, & 10; • Join us for the class closing every week (approximately 10 minutes).
